The GRID vs. Live Drafting the "Old" Way
The Old Way The GRID
Pick A is called out
  • Hunt through overall cheatsheet for player A, cross off.
  • Flip to positional cheatsheet, hunt for player, cross off again.
  • Flip back to overall cheatsheet and resume thinking about strategy for --
  • Locate player A in 1-2 seconds, double-click
  • Continue examining THE GRID for your strategy
Pick B is called out
  • Hunt through overall cheatsheet for --
  • Repeat above
Pick C is called out immediately
  • Hunt through overall cheatsheet for player C, cross off.
  • Flip to positional --
  • Repeat above
Pick D is called out quickly
  • Flip back to overall cheatsheet
  • Hunt through overall cheatsheet for player D, cross off.
  • Flip to positional cheatsheet, hunt for player, cross off again.
  • Flip back to overall cheat --
  • Repeat above
Pick E is called out and now you’re on the clock
  • Hunt through overall cheatsheet for player E, cross off.
  • Flip to positional cheatsheet, hunt for player, cross off again.
  • Flip back to overall cheatsheet
  • Ask the whole room who player B was. Some eyes roll (that guy again), the rest are also busy crossing off players.  Someone finally answers.
  • Hunt through overall cheatsheet for player B, cross off.
  • Flip to positional cheatsheet, hunt for player, cross off again.
  • Repeat all for player C.
  • Half your clock time is now gone. You’re frazzled and you’ve barely had time to cross off names much less think about the implications those picks.
  • Stare at cheatsheet. Rifle through magazines and internet printouts for schedules, depth charts, and bye weeks to find someone who stands out. Look at cheatsheet again --
  • Repeat above
  • Spend your whole clock working on nothing but your strategy.
  • Take player X, who is without a doubt the best fit for your strategy.

Note: you cannot imagine just how many factors you can evaluate in a real-time draft using THE GRID. Continue reading to find out just what’s possible.

Time’s up
  • “Screw it, I’ll take [player X who doesn’t fit your strategy in the slightest]”
You’ll never hear "time’s up" using the grid.
